Identity Crises in the Age of the Patriarchal Extinction Burst
Being an adult with a fully developed frontal lobe is recognizing that you are living through one of the most disorienting eras in human history; for context, I am talking about the extinction burst of patriarchy. An extinction burst is what happens when a long‑standing system senses its own end. It gets louder, more erratic and more desperate. So, it tries to hang on tight and tries to convince you that without it, you will not survive.
While all this is happening you are trying to become someone who can hold empathy without collapsing, someone who can practice justice without burning out, someone who can embody authenticity without dissociating from the world around you. You are trying to shift your identity in a time when identity itself is under cultural siege.
When the Old Self Fights for Its Life
Identity shifts are rarely gentle. They threaten the parts of you that were trained to survive under old rules. They unsettle the people who benefited from your previous patterns and disrupt the unspoken agreements you made with family, partners, workplaces, and society at large. And so, when you begin to change, I mean, even in small ways; the world around you often reacts as if you are the problem.
You’ve felt it. That not so obvious pushback, the guilt that sneaks up on you when you are in your #bestlife. The internal push and pull gets stronger the more you evolve. Sometimes, people think it’s a failure or weakness to change your views and behaviors.
Dear reader, the internal tug-of-war is your transformation. When you shift, the systems that shaped you tremble.
The Patriarchal Mindset: The Quietest Mask We Wear
Patriarchy is not just a system “out there.” It is a set of internalized behaviors, beliefs, and reflexes that live inside all of us regardless of gender.
It shows up in the smallest, quietest ways:
The moment you catch yourself shrinking your body because you were taught that youth and thinness equal worth.
The moment you center a man’s comfort, desire, or approval before your own, not because you consciously choose to, but because you were conditioned to.
The moment you silence your intuition because you were taught that logic is superior to embodied wisdom.
Those sneaky behaviors are left-overs of a system that taught you to survive by abandoning parts of yourself.
And yet, here you are- noticing.
Why the Patriarchy Is in an Extinction Burst
We are witnessing the collapse of a system that can no longer sustain itself. Down with the patriarchy I say, we ride at dawn. It is visible thanks to the added contribution of GenZ in the workforce, that people are refusing to sacrifice their mental health for productivity. Women are refusing to perform smallness. Men are refusing to perform hardness. Children are refusing to inherit trauma as tradition; hence the low or no contact boom with parents and guardians, creativity with parenting and asking for their needs to be met. Communities are refusing to uphold hierarchies that harm the vulnerable. The old world is dying because too many of us have tasted what it feels like to be whole.
Why Identity Shifts Feel Like Psychosis
When you begin to deconstruct old identities, it can feel like you’re losing your mind.
You’re not.
You’re losing your programming.
Patriarchal conditioning taught you to override your body, distrust your emotions, and outsource your authority. When you reclaim those things, your nervous system may panic. It might feel like dissociation, emotional flooding, confusion, rage, grief and the biggest most important sensation of “Who am I without these rules?”
If that question has crossed your mind, you are learning to operate without domination as a compass. And the key to finding out who you are without the old rules is to develop capacity- the ability to stay present with yourself long enough for the new identity to take root.
The Practice of Becoming the Next Version of Yourself
Identity shifts are not one‑time events. They are practices. Rehearsals. Repetitions until the practice becomes the identity. Eventually, the new identity becomes embodied and then the new normal sets in. This is how you rise.
You practice choosing yourself.
You practice listening to your body.
You practice telling the truth and how to handle the backlash that comes of it.
You practice not shrinking.
You practice not centering someone else’s comfort over your own, especially when there is no need to do so.
The Men Who Are Shifting Too
Patriarchy harms men as deeply as it harms women, but it shows up differently.
If you observe in real life and some pockets of the internet, there are men who are trying. How? by observing the ones who hug each other again without fear of being labeled soft. The ones who maintain their health and beauty not from vanity, but from shared responsibility with their partners. It’s the ones who speak to their nephews with tenderness instead of toughness. These are only a few examples.
These men are reclaiming their humanity. Being privy to a few of my loved one’s conversations and being in the presence of the men who are practicing and embodying the identity shift, gives me hope. It proves that identity shifts are possible across gender, across generations, across cultures.
The Matriarchal Model
There are endless conversations happening surrounding what model or structure will heal the world. The suggestions are endless and there are key people of influence who are demonstrating what being a leader is. However, in my bubbles of conversations, healing is the word that surfaces. And when people think of healing, they think of mom, women, and a matriarchy. Despite hearing the word so much, many people misunderstand matriarchy as “women ruling over men.” Hence, the fear of those who uphold the patriarchy, being subservient to women. Let’s be clear, the matriarchy is a circular model, not a hierarchical one. At the center of the circle are:
children
elders
the vulnerable
the future
Around them stand the people of influence who do not seek to dominate, but to protect, nourish, and sustain. Matriarchy is not about power over but power with.
It infuses life, survival, and collective thriving. This is the ecosystem where identity shifts are not punished! They are expected.
What You Can Learn to Position Yourself for the Future
The conversations surrounding this extinction burst are about cultural shift. That is true and you are participating in it whether you can admit it to yourself or not. What do you choose? Being passive or being aware and aligning yourself with the values that honor human dignity, empathy, and sustenance of life.
Your choices ripple outward.
To position yourself as a builder of the future, practice:
Embodied awareness: noticing when old programming tries to reclaim you.
Emotional literacy: naming your internal experience without shame and guilt.
Community accountability: allowing others witness your growth.
Compassionate courage: choosing justice even when it costs you comfort. This requires discernment as well.
Authenticity and Respectability: refusing to abandon yourself for approval.
Children may not always listen to what we say, but they always copy what we do. So while you are evolving into the next version of yourself, remember that your loved ones, and especially children are watching. They will follow you into the world that you are creating.
The Invitation
You are the hero of this story if you are willing.
Willing to examine yourself.
Willing to unlearn.
Willing to evolve.
Willing to rise.
As the patriarchy collapses, the question is not whether the world will change. The change is already happening.
The question is:
Will your evolution add to empathy, kindness, justice, and authenticity?
Only you can answer that. And your answer will shape the world we build next.
Until next time, intentionally curate your life one habit change at a time.
